How important is website speed really?
“I want it all, I want it all and I want it now” Remember the song by Queen?
Yeah, we live in an instant society. We want everything now.
Fewer and fewer people read texts longer than a few lines – or rather, fewer and fewer people are able to read, let alone understand, so much.
The viewing rate of videos longer than 2-3 minutes is falling sharply.
Instant coffee, instant noodles, instant fame, instant love.
We search less and less online, instead we like to ask some AI bot (verbally, if possible – typing is so hard work).
We don’t have the patience to wait, not even if our favourite website takes a just a second longer to load.
That’s why it’s become so important to be able to read-watch-click on what you’re looking for as quickly as possible.
You can find all sorts of information about website speed on the web.
There are various, well documented studies on visitors’ behaviour telling you how much increased traffic you get by reducing load time.
This is of course all sector specific information.
After all, if you’re in the car parts trade in your family business, it may not help to know how much extra traffic Walmart has got from a 1 second reduction in load time.
Neither the industry, nor the market, or the size is right.
Still, I’ll try to illustrate why your website load speed is important.
I’ll skip the marketing crap (hope you don’t mind) and show you an example.
According to Google, the acceptable load time is maximum 1.5 seconds.
Holy cow! I can’t even say “one and a half seconds” within that much time!
This means that when you type the address of a web page into your browser (e.g. itbit.cc), that’s the maximum time it can take from you pressing ENTER until everything appearing in front of you.
Moreover, according to their research:
if your website loads longer than
3 seconds,
about 60% of your visitors will click away!
Off they go, adios, never-to-see-you-again!
They do not just leave, they go to your competition and buy there!
So, let’s see how much money you lose on that alone:
Let’s say you advertise (e.g. on facebook) for $10k.
According to the ancient marketing wisdom, half of the amount spent on advertising is wasted – unfortunately we don’t know which half.
So, of the $10k, only $5k will be expedient, but at least that will bring visitors to your website.
It’s just that if your site is slow to load then 60% of them will leave without seeing anything you have to offer!
Let’s do the math:
Out of $10k, $5k is expedient.
You lose 60% of that due to slow loading, so only 40% remains, that’s $2k!
That means that out of every $10k you spend on advertising
only $2k will actually bring you visitors!
Not profit, just visitors!
And how many of those will buy?
You might as well open the window and throw the money to the street…
These figures are theoretical but you can convert them to your own industry and the formula will work just about the same way.
Well, that’s why it’s important to have a fast and well-functioning website!
The same is true if your site is fast, but it just doesn’t work properly.
You will also lose visitors if, for example:
- images and videos don’t appear,
- you only see the frame of the google map but the map doesn’t show,
- links point to non-existent pages (404 error),
- the menu doesn’t work,
- you fill in the form and still can’t subscribe,
- and so forth.
And if, on top of this, your site loads slow – I think you get the idea…
If your website was like this,
would you be happy with it?
Ok, but what is the solution?
What can you do with a slow and suffering website?
How can I have my website stop running up losses?
Let’s do a Free Website Audit to establish the roots of the issues.
Once the assessment is done, the necessary improvements should be carried out.
It’s as simple as that.
When you have no-one to turn to with your suffering WordPress site – just let us know.
We are here for you!
Now, this usually does not lead to a complete overhaul (although it might be inevitable if the site is already in such a condition), but a thorough do-up is definitely in order.
The website needs cleaning, updating, modernizing, maybe even replacing a few things.
If you don’t want to or can’t do it yourself, let your developer know. You know, the guy who first built the site.
But what if they are not available? Or they are but they seem flaky, stringing you along?
Then let us know and we’ll help!
We offer you free of charge access to many hundreds of premium plugins that you’d otherwise have to pay for.
In a number of occasions, the hosting provider’s servers turn out to be slow, so your website needs to be migrated to a more modern host to make it really fast.
We can help you with that too – not only with the migration but we can also provide modern and fast hosting.
Our Free Website Audit will show you how, step-by-step.
It is free with no strings attached and in the end you will understand exactly what your website needs.
